battlefield 2Need a new online shooter. Here are my options.....
oh wow, that's a really good price for qw. i might get it at that price...
Yeah, that's what I thought too! My only worry is how active it is online. I'm downloading the demo now, but I don't know if that one map will really tell me much. And to the guy who said Battlefield 2, is there a reason why? Is it still pretty active?I know that QW also has a mod toolset now, doesn't it? Or maybe I'm wrong. Doen't BF2 have one as well? How is the mod community if it does? Also, on BF2, do most people have the expansions? And can I play them without having the expansions?Sorry, I just don't want to get a game that I'll be bored with after a week.Brent
BF2 is a nice contrast to CoD4-I play both, and although they are both modern shooters, BF2 is more realistic (but it's not uber realistic-like CoD4 HC,) more open, great mods, and does a great job with aircraft, armor, etc (although I play inf more.) The community is still active, but, at least o the servers I play on, there is less of a 'community' feel then CoD4 (people talk a lot less.) I heard that the community of BF2 is about as big as the BF2142 community (although I only play BF2.)
ET:QW is kind of like Wolf: ET crossed with BF2, and with aliens and objective-based play.
I, personally prefer BF2 (ET:QW was only on my HDD for a few weeks, BF2 has been on-and-off since I brought it (over a year ago.)
Oh, and if you get BF2, buy the Special Forces expansion, you need it to play well online-the new unlocks make a difference, and you might as well start with them.
As for mods, go to www.moddb.com and go to the 'Battlefield 2' section. Need I say more?-although only a small percentage of them are played online-mostly Project Reality 0.7.
Want real contrast to COD4? Get UT3.
Battlefield 2. There are still thousands of players playing the game, lots of nice achievements to unlock. The maps are huge, and vehicles are always fun when you run over people.
Thanks, linkthewindow, for your viewpoint. I wonder how much the Special Forces expansion goes for. I have only checked at the official site since I didn't figure it would be an option for me right now. Can I still get it by itself? Also, how active are the QW servers?Brent
BF2 + Expansions I would pick that over ETQW and 2142 for sure.
Oops, missed a couple of posts there.TheCrazed420, why do you say that? I did watch the Gamespot Tournament TV of that game, but it didn't catch my as well as QW did when watching the tournament. Maybe that wasn't a good representation though? Also, so the Battlefield2 servers are still pretty full then, eh? What is a good mod community I can look for?Brent
In all honosty mate I would strongly suggest saving up a few more bills and buying Unreal 3.

Brent
UT3 is still classic Unreal. Very fast, arcade action with deep gameplay. No other game matches the pace it sets, and while it could be a little hard to adapt at first, once you start getting better at it and start fragging ppl at light speeds, its like crack. Try the demo.
Cool. I'll download all the demos. I'll give them all some time and maybe ask more questions. Thanks!Brent
Ok, I've been trying the games to see which ones I like. QW seems quite fun, and to be a bit more fast paced. But then again, I'm only playing against the computer so far because I don't want to screw up someone's game due to being a noob and it's VERY team based. Same with BF2. BF2 seems slower to me for some reason, but maybe it's just the demo? Also, the graphics seem better on QW to me, which is understandable due to it being much newer. But again, my experience is limited. So is the retail of either of these games better or worse than the demos will show? Should I just go online and play some real people? Or will I piss somebody off because of not being very advanced?Brent
battlefield 2142
battlefield 2142
Well, I was considering that one as well, but admittedly I hadn't tried it yet. Is it still pretty active? If it is it looks like something I would enjoy. Is it a fast paced game, and is there a pretty active community in itself? Are there mods available for it?I'll give it a try regardless. I had forgotten all about it!Brent

Team Fortress 2 ($29.95 on Steam) or Day of Defeat: Source ($9.95 on Steam).
Easily the two best online multiplayers available.

I had forgotten all about it! Brent
It's still very active. Its mod community isn't quite on par with BF2, I don't think, but it's there. I personally would go with 2142, also; it's an improvement over BF2, and I didn't think much of Quake Wars from the demo. Be sure to get the Northern Strike booster pack (was $10 at release, so it wouldn't be more than that today), it adds some unlocks and new maps; overall an addition worth it for the price. I do recommend that you get BF2 as well, eventually. BF2142 is my favorite online shooter of all, but BF2 is right behind it. As recommended before, you should get the expansion pack Special Forces, the addition of seven more unlockable weapons and the ability to unlock two things at each promotion instead of just one is really nice, and the extra maps aren't half bad overall, either.
