I have the game as part of the best of pc collection and for that you do need the disc in the drive while playing. My educated guess is that the same applies to the stand-alone version. Do you need a disc to play jedi outcast once it's installed?

Yes. In order to play all the games you require the DVD's to be in the drive as you play. But other than that the Best of PC pack is outstanding.
